My journey began most consciously in high school when I evaluated my skills and decided I would do well in psychology. I maintained that goal all the way to graduate school, and I remember my first day there, sitting in my first class thinking, "This is exactly where I belong." Now I know that many people do not have the privilege of feeling passionate about what they set out to do and for that I am grateful.
I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, followed by my Master's in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling with a certificate in Behavioral Health, all from the University of South Florida. Throughout graduate school, we students were encouraged to go to therapy ourselves. I followed that directive as well and learned just how uncomfortable it can be to sit in vulnerability. For me it was both anxiety provoking and enlightening. Years later, I worked my way to being a licensed mental health counselor and a certified addictions professional, which grants me permission to work with both mental health and substance abuse concerns/issues.
I spent the first 6 years of my career working at a drug rehabilitation facility doing intensive outpatient (individuals and groups), methadone maintenance, and DUI groups. I never imagined myself doing that type of work, but what I realized is that substance use is never about the substance and addicts are some of the strongest people I've ever met.
From there I ventured off to a company that works mostly with children and families, which is clearly much different work. There I honed my skills of diagnosing, working with family systems, and beginning couples counseling. There are other things I've done but no matter what I do in this field- one thing remains true for me- I love working with people and helping to add to happiness in their lives.
To me, everyone can benefit therapy as it is an opportunity to slow down and pay attention to the deep inner workings of our mind. And not the mind as in the brain, but the mind in the way that Dr. Dan Siegel describes it, including our thoughts, senses, emotions, body, and even interpersonal relationships. This work is my passion, and each session is exactly where I want to be as it energizes me to be with people in that way. I believe that happiness, connection, and wellbeing is available to all of us, and although it is not always easy to obtain, I enjoy being a part of people's journeys.
