Ask a room full of scientists what consciousness is, and you'll get a room full of different answers. Ask most people on the street, and they'll point to their head. We've been taught that consciousness is something the brain manufactures, that "you" are a byproduct of neurons firing, and when the neurons stop, you stop.
But there's another possibility, one that a growing number of researchers, physicians, and university departments are taking seriously: consciousness isn't produced by the brain at all. It's the essence of who you are, and it may exist outside of the brain and body entirely.
In this view, your brain and body aren't the source of you. They're the tools, the instruments you use to sense, filter, and communicate with consciousness. Think of a radio: the music isn't created inside the box. The radio receives a signal that exists in the space around it and translates it into something you can hear. Damage the radio and the music gets distorted or goes silent, but the signal itself never went anywhere.
That's the model we're going to explore here β what researchers call nonlocal consciousness β and the surprising amount of academic research behind it.
Consciousness: The Essence of Who You Are
Consciousness is your awareness β the part of you that experiences, witnesses, chooses, and knows. It's what looks out from behind your eyes. It's what notices your thoughts, which means it can't simply be your thoughts. Your personality shifts over a lifetime, your body replaces itself cell by cell, your beliefs evolve β and yet something in you has remained continuously you since your earliest memory. That continuity is consciousness.
The mainstream assumption is that this awareness is generated by brain activity, the way a lightbulb generates light. But here's the honest truth: after more than a century of neuroscience, no one has ever explained how three pounds of tissue produces subjective experience. Scientists call this "the hard problem of consciousness," and it remains completely unsolved.
The nonlocal model resolves it differently. Consciousness is fundamental β it exists in its own right, beyond the body β and the brain acts as a receiver, a filter, and a translator. The body is how consciousness senses the physical world; the brain is how it communicates through it. This isn't just spiritual poetry. It's a hypothesis that serious researchers at major universities are actively investigating.
The University of Virginia: 50+ Years of Studying What Shouldn't Be Possible
The Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is one of the most remarkable research units in American academia. Founded in 1967 by psychiatrist Dr. Ian Stevenson, DOPS is devoted to the rigorous, empirical study of experiences that challenge the mainstream model of consciousness β with a primary focus on the mind's relationship to the body and the possibility that consciousness survives physical death.
Read that again: a division inside a major medical school, staffed by psychiatrists and neuroscientists, has spent over five decades scientifically investigating whether who you are outlives your body.
What the Near-Death Experience Research Shows
Dr. Bruce Greyson, professor emeritus of psychiatry at UVA and one of the world's foremost NDE researchers, has studied more than 1,000 near-death experiences since the 1970s. He even developed the standardized scale β the Greyson NDE Scale β that researchers worldwide use to measure these experiences. His findings, and those of his DOPS colleagues, include patterns that are very hard to explain if consciousness is just brain chemistry:
Lucid awareness when the brain is offline. People report vivid, hyper-real, logically structured experiences during cardiac arrest β when the brain has little to no measurable activity. If the brain produces consciousness, experience should be impossible in those moments. Instead, many experiencers describe the clearest awareness of their lives. Greyson found that among cardiac arrest survivors, roughly 10 to 20 percent report an NDE.
Veridical perception. Some experiencers accurately report events that happened around their unconscious body β conversations in other rooms, procedures performed, details they could not have perceived through their senses β later verified by medical staff or family. DOPS documents and investigates these "veridical out-of-body" cases precisely because they suggest perception happening from a vantage point outside the body.
These aren't dreams or hallucinations. Greyson's research has systematically examined and ruled out the easy explanations β oxygen deprivation, medication, dream states, wishful thinking. NDEs occur across cultures, ages, and belief systems, follow consistent patterns, and are remembered decades later with a clarity and stability that hallucinations simply don't have.
They permanently transform people. DOPS research shows NDEs produce lasting changes in values, priorities, and personality β reduced fear of death, increased compassion, a felt sense of being part of a greater whole. In fact, recent DOPS research published in 2025 focuses on how to best support experiencers whose entire worldview has been reorganized by what they saw.
Taken together, this body of work is some of the strongest academic evidence we have that consciousness is nonlocal β that awareness can operate independently of a functioning brain. The signal doesn't die when the radio does.
The Field of Information Around Us
If consciousness isn't confined to the skull, then a fascinating question follows: where is it? One answer gaining traction across physics, consciousness studies, and contemplative research is that the space around us isn't empty at all β it's full of information.
Physicists have long known that what we perceive as "empty space" is anything but: it's a dense field of energy and potential. Theorists like Sir Roger Penrose and Dr. Stuart Hameroff have proposed that consciousness is woven into the fine-scale structure of the universe itself. In this view, your awareness isn't locked inside your head β it's participating in a field of information that surrounds and connects all of us. Intuition, sudden knowing, creative downloads, the felt sense of a room, the moments when you think of someone right before they call β these may be more than coincidence. They may be moments when we're accessing the field.
Why the Right Brain Seems to Be the Doorway
Here's where neuroscience gets genuinely interesting. If the brain is a receiver, it isn't a uniform one β and a number of researchers point to the right hemisphere as the side most open to the signal.
The left hemisphere is our narrow-beam attention: language, categories, logic, breaking the world into manageable parts. It's brilliant at manipulating what it already knows. The right hemisphere is broad-beam: it takes in the whole, the new, the relational, the implicit β everything that exists between the categories. Psychiatrist and neuroscience researcher Iain McGilchrist, who spent decades studying hemispheric differences, argues that the right hemisphere is our primary point of contact with reality as it actually is, while the left constructs a useful but limited map.
Neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor gave the world a living demonstration. When a stroke shut down her left hemisphere, she didn't experience nothingness β she experienced boundless, blissful, expanded awareness, a felt dissolving of the boundary between herself and everything around her. With the left brain's filter offline, something vast came through.
Interestingly, this converges with the NDE research too: studies of experiencers have explored links between these profound states and right-hemisphere and right temporal regions of the brain. Mystics, meditators, and experiencers across traditions describe the same shift β out of the analytical narrator and into spacious, connected awareness. The right brain doesn't create that awareness. It appears to tune to it.
Consciousness Research Is Happening Across Academia
UVA isn't alone. Consciousness has quietly become one of the most active frontiers in university research:
University of Arizona β Center for Consciousness Studies. Directed by anesthesiologist Dr. Stuart Hameroff, this center hosts the famous "Science of Consciousness" conference and is home to the Penrose-Hameroff "Orch OR" theory β the proposal that consciousness arises from quantum processes in microtubules, linked to the structure of spacetime itself, meaning consciousness may be a feature of the universe rather than a product of the brain. The theory is currently being tested experimentally as part of a major Templeton-funded project on theories of consciousness. The center's SEMA Lab also studies meditation and awareness, using focused ultrasound and brain imaging to explore and enhance mindful states.
University of Michigan β Center for Consciousness Science. Founded by anesthesiologist-neuroscientist Dr. George Mashour, this center studies the mechanisms and measurement of consciousness itself β how awareness fades under anesthesia and returns, how the brain's connectivity changes across states, and how we can detect consciousness in patients with severe brain injury. Their work on levels of consciousness is mapping exactly what the "receiver" is doing as awareness comes and goes.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine β Critical Care and Resuscitation Science. Dr. Sam Parnia leads the AWARE studies, the largest investigations of awareness during cardiac arrest ever conducted. His team has documented reports of lucid consciousness during resuscitation and detected surges of organized brain activity in patients up to an hour into CPR β findings that challenge everything we assumed about when experience ends.
Johns Hopkins β Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. The first center of its kind in the U.S., studying how psychedelic states alter consciousness β including mystical-type experiences that, like NDEs, reliably reduce fear of death and produce lasting positive change. Notably, these compounds appear to work partly by quieting the brain's filtering networks, which fits the receiver model: turn down the filter, and more comes through.
Different departments, different methods, one converging picture: consciousness is far bigger, stranger, and more fundamental than the old "brain secretion" model ever allowed.
What This Means for You
This isn't just an intellectual exercise. If consciousness is the essence of who you are β and the evidence increasingly suggests awareness that operates beyond the brain β then a few things follow:
You are not your thoughts. The anxious narrator in your head is a function of the brain-tool, not the truth of you. The you that notices the thoughts is something deeper. This is the foundation of nearly every effective therapeutic and contemplative practice.
Your body is an instrument worth caring for. If the body is how consciousness senses and communicates with the world, then nervous system regulation, embodiment, rest, and presence aren't self-indulgence β they're tuning the receiver.
Stillness is access. Meditation, time in nature, breathwork, creative flow β practices that quiet the left brain's constant commentary β open the channel to the wider field of information. That gut knowing you keep dismissing? It may be data.
Death may not be what we feared. Thousands of documented experiencers, studied for over fifty years at a major medical school, consistently report the same thing: consciousness continued, expanded, and did not want to come back. Whatever you make of that, it's worth sitting with.
The question "what is consciousness?" may turn out to be the same question as "who are you?" And the answer, according to a growing body of university research, is bigger than your brain ever let you believe.
